HPAA - January 2001

Tony Apesos demonstrates oil painting on January 13th, from 1 – 3 PM at Menino Hall in the Hyde Park Branch Library.

Items for inclusion in the next issue of this newsletter may be emailed to alwallstrom@mediaone.net or mailed to Hyde Park Art Assoc. c/o Cheryl Murphy, 258 Turtle Pond Parkway, Hyde Park, MA 02136.

January 13 Meeting

Tony Apesos, will be demonstrating classic oil painting techniques in Menino Hall on the lower level of the Hyde Park Branch Library from 1-3 PM on Saturday, January 13th. The techniques of underpainting, glazing, and the use of opaque and transparent paint, were perfected by master painters of the 16th century and used to great effect by later masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Picasso.

Mr Apesos is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at the Art Institute of Boston where he has been teaching since 1992. His goal as an artist is to use the figure to engage the viewer in a visual metaphor for human longing for things both seen and unseen, for things gained and things lost – a metaphor of a fleeting moment distilled into a single image.

Mr. Apesos work has been shown in many group, Invitational, and one-person exhibitions including the New Art Center in Newton this past May, Art on The Point at U. Mass, Boston, and the Amos Eno Gallery in New York.

Upcoming meetings

Program Director, Debra Fitzgerald, continues to arrange outstanding demos – Portrait painter, Edwina Caci will demo in February. She will be followed in March by old friend and returnee, Robert Douglas Hunter who will be offering his insightful critiques of HPAA artists’ works.

Thanks to Roz Farbush for giving us all some insights into her life in art and as well as some very useful tips for working with acrylic paints.

If you've absented yourself from HPAA monthly meetings because the sound of bouncing basketballs left you with a headache, or because the folding chairs gave you a backache, or because the cavern at the Muni gave you vertigo, then you will have to think of new reasons to stay away this year!

NEW MEETING ROOM
Meetings this year will be held in Menino Hall at the newly-renovated Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library located at 35 Harvard Avenue. Menino Hall is downstairs in the library and may be reached by either elevator or stairway.

Meetings will be held, as usual, on the second Saturday of the month from 1 to 3 PM.

Paul Nolan has volunteered for refreshment duty for the September 9th meeting, but volunteers for October & November will be appreciated. See Nancy Marotta, Refreshments Director for details.

SEPTEMBER 9 MEETING

The September meeting features Bob Jorgensen a watercolorist whose love and appreciation of nature and the outdoors is reflected in his paintings of coastal scenes and wildlife. Bob is a signature member of both the New England and the Northeast Watercolor Societies and his work is shown nationally. Bob's studio is in Ashland, Massachusetts.

Photos from The City Hall Show will also be available for viewing.

NEW EXHIBITION SPACE

Two new exhibition spaces are now available to members of HPAA:
Mocha Java - Hyde Park's newest coffee house has made it's wall space available to HPAA, and Menino Hall at the Library is also available for exhibitions by the HPAA.

These spaces will be available for One-Person Shows on a monthly basis. Group or combined shows may be scheduled in the future. A sign-up sheet will be available at each meeting.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DOT BABINEAU

Dot won first place in the Oil Painting category at the Marina Bay Arts Affair Show held in Quincy, MA last August. Let's give a big hand for a talented artist.

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Cheryl Murphy announced the Association was awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant for this year. The funds will go a long way toward meeting expenses for demonstrators, bus rental, etc.

The possibility of combining the HPAA with the West Roxbury Art Association was discussed - there is no interest in such a move.

The necessity for increased publicity to heighten public awareness of the HPAA and it's activities and to enhance member participation was discussed. Nancy Marotta is going to investigate the use of Valu-Pak coupons to advertise the monthly demos. Al Wallstrom will work to improve publicity for HPAA events in the local print media.   Sandra Toro has provided some space on her web page for HPAA use. She will also secure a domain name for a future HPAA web site.

HYDE PARK ART ASSOCIATION FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

Dear Members,

This year we have been fortunate to have a fabulous line up of guest demonstrators, all doing new and exciting things in the art world. This month we are happy to be batting 1,000 again with guest demonstrator Michele Dangelo. Ms. Dangelo is a Back Bay artist, who works and teaches from Fenway Studios. Ms. Dangelo will discuss her approach to her work during the 1-3 PM demonstration as well as donate one of her pieces to be raffled.

Our meeting will be held Saturday February 12th, at the Hyde Park Community Center, main auditorium, located at 1179 River Street, Hyde Park. As always, the public is welcome to come and enjoy this free event.

If anyone is able to provide refreshments please call me at 364-9336.

I am pleased to announce that we have received a grant for next year, in the sum of $1,000. This money goes far in helping our organization bring quality demonstrations to you throughout the month.

We have received an invitation for a show to run at the new Chardon Street Court house by William Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and Paul Tierney Register.

Deadline for submission is March 1st. If you would be interested in participating in this show, please bring slides or color photographs to the meeting so that I may incorporate them into our proposal. We will be discussing the time slot we will request at the meeting.

I plan to propose a group event.

On the topic of shows, it is time to prepare for our Annual Spring show at City

Hall. Paul Nolan has kindly offered to be the drop off center for our pieces once again. Thank you Paul. I will be looking for a hanging and take down committee. This year we have been given an extra week for our show, due to availability. All the better for sales! Hanging the show is an afternoons work, but even help loading the vehicles would be appreciated. Next months newsletter will include your application sheets. Only paid members would be allowed to hang. Invitations announcing our reception will be sent separately.

If there is any upcoming shows or awards you have recently won, please notify me for inclusion in our newsletter.

With great regret, I am announcing the passing of Ed Pauletti, a long time Hyde Park Art member. Ed was a gentleman, and well loved member of our organization. Our condolences to Mrs. Colina Pauletti, also a member and their family. He will be missed.

I hope to see everyone on the 12th.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Basilici Murphy

Hyde Park Art Association
November Newsletter
Sharon Carson

Dear Members,

This month we are proud to be hosting an oil landscape demonstration by Sharon Carson, of Rockport. Ms. Carson does all of her paintings on location in the Cape Ann area. She is especially attracted to the colors found in nature. Ms. Carson works exclusively in oils. The richness of the color and "juiciness" of the pigment appeal to her.

Ms. Carson is a member and officer on the Board of Governors of the Rockport Art Association, and a member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Copley Society of Boston. She is an active teacher and demonstrator. Ms. Carson was featured in the November 1989 issue of American Artist magazine. We are happy to welcome her back to Hyde Park for this exciting demonstration.

Our monthly meeting will take place Saturday, November 13, 1999. It will be held at Hyde Park Community Center, 1179 River Street, Hyde Park, from 1-3 PM, in the main auditorium.

We have had some changes in the line up for this year, as of yet we have not filled the vacancy left in December by the cancellation of Peter Spataro. January demonstrator will be Louise Trenholm, from the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod . Louise will be working in abstract form. February we will be hosting a demonstration by Michele Dangelo, who will be working in oil. Both January and February artists came via Sarah Fielding Gunn, whom we would like to thank for not only this help in completing our line up but for giving a wonderful demonstration in October. For those of you that were unable to attend, I can only say, "Sorry" because you missed an outstanding meeting and a beautiful raffle piece that came complete with gold frame. Ave Marie Scienski was the lucky winner. Ave is also the artist behind the beautiful mural on the old Hyde Park theater on Fairmount Ave.

We are still looking for volunteers to bring refreshments for monthly meetings. No one has volunteered as of yet. This months meeting is still unhosted. If you are able to provide a beverage and snack at any meeting, please call me at 617-364-9336.

We would like to wish a speedy recovery for our member and host of Greater Roslindale Arts show, Monday at 6:00 PM on Channel 24, Glenn Williams who was side lined with unexpected surgery last month. Glenn is always looking for artists to come on the show and talk about their art and events they are involved in. Contact Janice Williams at jwilliams@gatecorporation.com or FAX (617) 469-9334. Janice has a web site selling art work by artists. Send up to three photos with captions and artist bio to: Janice Williams, Gate Corporation, 405 Belgrade Ave., W. Roxbury, Ma 02132.

We would also like to welcome new members, J. Marshall Dyke of Brockton and Marilyn Mc Carthy of Dedham. See you all Saturday, November 13th

October 199

Dear Members,

Let me begin by apologizing to those of you that came out to our Sept. meeting and left disappointed because we had no demonstrator. I called Mr. Cormier after I was made aware of the problem and left a message trying to find out if there were extenuating circumstances that left Mr. Cormier unable to attend. He did not return my phone call. This is the second time Mr. Cormier has failed to show for a demonstration. I’m sorry to say that we will not ask him back.

On a happier note, we are pleased to announce that Sarah Fielding Gunn will be doing a pastel demonstration for us Sat. Oct. 9th, 1999 at 1-3 PM. Our meeting will be held at the Hyde Park Community Center , 1179 River Street, Hyde Park, in the main auditorium. Ms. Gunn comes to us from the Pastel Society of Cape Cod where she is President. She has recently returned from a large convention on new methods and mediums. I’m sure she will have many things to tell us. As always, these meetings are free and opened to the general public.

This months refreshments will be provided by the Association. We will be looking for people to provide refreshments at upcoming meetings. Please see me after the meeting or call 617-364-9336, email at Murphu@aol.com if you are able to take a month.

Last month I misinformed members that Russ Cevoli had won 2nd place for his pastel entry in the Marina Bay show. Russ actually took 1st place and sold the work. Congratulations Russ, and my apologies for the error.

This month Russ has orchestrated another change of paintings for the Hyde Park Savings Bank. Those of you who would like to be in the next Bank Show should see Russ or me after the meeting to get your name on the roster. I have also been in contact with Ms. Chan , who owns the new Talk and Wok restaurant in Cleary Sq.. She is interested in having a rotating art show. Each month would be available to a different artist. I will keep you informed as this develops.

We are thinking about having a trip to a museum rather than a demonstration in either Jan, Feb. or April. Any feedback on the subject would be appreciated. We can talk after the meeting.

Greater Roslindale Art Association is having a Small Works Show at Citizens Bank, 777 South St., Roslindale; Thurs., Oct. 14, 1999 6-8 PM. For further information call 323-0810.
